Review and development of bespoke health and safety procedures for thecentre:mk

The work of DTZ’s health and safety team to undertake a review of safety management procedures at ‘thecentre:mk’ shopping centre in Milton Keynes.

Overview

DTZ’s health and safety team was appointed to review the existing safety management procedures at ‘thecentre:mk’, a substantial regional shopping centre facility in Milton Keynes.

DTZ’s role was to use its retail experience to identify areas of weakness and offer improvements which would enhance procedures and lead to improvement in operational risk management controls.

What DTZ did

  • Reviewed the existing safety management system and operational control procedures to verify their suitability and effectiveness to manage risk
  • Offered advice and support to further enhance the procedures in order to further improve risk management
  • Established an ongoing review strategy to monitor adherence to the procedures and assess their continued validity

Results

DTZ’s vast experience of the retail sector ensures that we fully understand the risks from operating major shopping centre schemes, and how these can be effectively controlled.

This support enabled us to give pragmatic advice to the in-house health and safety team to enable them to enhance their safety management system and update their procedures, in line with current industry best practice.

DTZ also established an ongoing review strategy to ensure that the safety management system would be kept up to date, so risks could continue to be controlled. This also helped to reduce liabilities for the client and reduced operational running costs.
